Why Share Passwords With Friends and Family?
One of the main reasons friends and family members share login credentials is to use each other’s streaming services and subscriptions to save money. Examples can include login credentials for accounts such as Amazon Prime, Hulu and Disney+. Many college students also use their parent’s streaming accounts to avoid having to pay for them themselves, allowing them to save money.
For families, sharing passwords can also be for more serious reasons like providing access to financial or medical accounts and records, in the event of an emergency. Sharing passwords is also necessary when sharing access to your WiFi network with friends and family members, as well as PIN codes for home door locks.
The Importance of Sharing Passwords Securely
While sharing passwords is necessary to do at times, it’s important to share passwords securely. Sharing passwords insecurely such as through text messages, messaging apps, email and other unencrypted means, places those accounts at risk of becoming compromised. When an account is compromised it can lead to an account takeover attack. An account takeover attack is when an unauthorized individual gains access to your account and locks you out of it by changing your password, which could prevent you from being able to access your account ever again.
Rather than placing your accounts at risk of compromise because of insecure password-sharing methods, use a password manager to share passwords securely with family and friends. Password managers like Keeper® use zero-knowledge encryption to ensure that when you share passwords and other sensitive information, it remains encrypted at all times to prevent outsiders from being able to intercept the data you’re sending.
How to Securely Share Passwords Using a Password Manager
Securely sharing passwords using a password manager may vary depending on the password manager application you use. Here’s how you can use Keeper Password Manager to securely share passwords with friends and family.
Sharing passwords using Keeper’s One-Time Share feature
One-Time Share is a feature that Keeper Security offers on all of its password manager plans, including Keeper’s free plan. Using this feature, you can securely share passwords and other sensitive information with anyone, even if they’re not a Keeper user, on a time-limited basis. When you share a record using One-Time Share, you can choose the amount of time you want the recipient to be able to view it and you can revoke access at any time. When the recipient gets a One-Time Share link, they can only view it on one device in read-only mode, meaning they won’t be able to alter the record or share it with someone else.
To share passwords with friends and family using Keeper’s One-Time Share feature, follow the instructions below.
- Log in to your Keeper Vault
- Go to the record you wish to share
- In the record, click where it says Share
- Click One-Time Share
- Click Create a One-Time Share
- Set a time for when you want the One-Time Share link to expire
- Click Create Link
- Share the link by copying and pasting it, sending an email or using a QR code
Once you’ve created the One-Time Share link you’ll be able to view it in the record it was created for and delete it anytime you’d like.
Sharing passwords using vault-to-vault sharing
Using vault-to-vault sharing, you can securely share passwords and other sensitive data indefinitely with family and friends who also have a Keeper account. Here’s how.
- Log in to your Keeper Vault
- Go to the record you wish to share with another Keeper user
- In the record, click where it says Share
- Under Add People, type in the email address of the user you want to share the record with
- Before clicking Add, select if you want the user to be able to edit, share or view only
- Click Add
Now that you’ve shared the record with another Keeper user, that record will be in their vault as well. As long as you’re the record owner, you can manage access to that record at any time and remove it whenever you’d like to. Some permissions you’ll be able to give recipients include the following:
- Can Edit
- Can Share
- Can Edit & Share
- View Only
Family members who want to be able to share records using vault-to-vault sharing would benefit from Keeper’s Family plan, which includes five private vaults for five family members.
