Add your trusted contacts

In Account > Emergency Access > Trusted Users, add up to five contacts. Each must have a Keeper account and a sharing relationship with you — non-users will receive an invite. Set this up now, not when you need it.

Set an access delay

Choose a waiting period for each contact, from immediately up to three months. The owner account and dashboard are notified when your trusted contact attempts to log in to your vault.

Yellow Accept Invite button.

Contacts accept the invite

Your contacts accept the Emergency Access invitation and are added as trusted contacts. No further action is required unless access is needed.

Gain access when needed

In an emergency, a trusted contact goes to My Access in their vault and requests access. After the delay period expires and you haven't revoked it, they're granted entry to your vault.

Give your loved ones peace of mind

In the event of incapacitation or death, your loved ones can securely access important accounts, documents and information without searching for passwords or navigating lengthy recovery processes.

Prevent misuse

Emergency Access includes a configurable waiting period of up to three months. If a trusted contact attempts to access your account, you'll have time to review or revoke the request before access is granted. If you take no action, access is granted automatically when the waiting period expires.

Read-only access

Trusted contacts can view what they need, but they can't edit, move, delete or export anything from your vault. Your data stays exactly as you left it, helping protect your privacy while preventing unauthorized changes or bulk downloads.

Zero-knowledge security

Emergency Access is built on Keeper's zero-knowledge security architecture. Your Master Password is never shared with Keeper or your trusted contacts. Instead, access is provisioned using your contact's public key and can only be decrypted using their corresponding private key. Keeper facilitates the encrypted key exchange without ever possessing the keys required to view your data.

Frequently asked questions

What is a digital legacy?

A digital legacy is the collection of online accounts, passwords, documents and information you leave behind. This includes everything from banking and email accounts to photos, subscriptions and important files.

Why does digital legacy planning matter?

Without a plan, your loved ones may be locked out of critical accounts or unable to access important information when they need it most. Digital legacy planning ensures the right people have access to what matters, without the stress of navigating recovery processes during an already difficult time.

How does Keeper support digital legacy planning?

Keeper helps you securely store the passwords, documents and information that make up your digital legacy. With Emergency Access, trusted contacts can access your vault when needed, ensuring important information isn't lost or left inaccessible.

Does my trusted contact need a Keeper account?

Yes, Emergency Access requires your trusted contact to have a Keeper account and an established sharing relationship with you. If they don't already have an account, Keeper will invite them to create one during setup.

What happens if I no longer want someone to have Emergency Access?

You can remove trusted contacts at any time. Just go to Account > Emergency Access > Trusted Users. Once removed, they can no longer access your vault.

Is Emergency Access available on all plans?

Emergency Access is available on consumer plans, including Keeper Password Manager and Keeper Family Password Manager. It's not available on Keeper Business or Keeper Enterprise plans.
