You can share your WiFi password safely by using a strong password, creating a guest network, enabling your router’s encryption and regularly updating your router. Sharing
No, you should not use ChatGPT to create passwords because it will likely produce the same password for multiple users and what you input will live on in its database. For those of you who are unfamiliar with what ChatGPT is and does, it is an Artificial Intelligence (AI) program used to follow instructions through prompts and provide a user with answers to both simple and complex questions. Many people have started using ChatGPT to help write essays for school, create written content or content strategies, translate text into different languages and more.
Continue reading to learn why using ChatGPT as a password generator is not a good idea and safer ways to generate strong passwords than ChatGPT.
The risks of using ChatGPT as a password generator
Using ChatGPT as a password generator can have many downsides that could, in turn, jeopardize the safety of your online accounts.
The passwords ChatGPT generates are not strong
When you give ChatGPT a prompt, such as the one I used – “generate 10 password options” – it will create passwords with no parameters on the number of characters, types of symbols or whether or not it includes both uppercase and lowercase letters. As you can see below, from my experience asking ChatGPT to generate 10 passwords, its selection is weak and cybercriminals would be able to guess these easily. Strong passwords should contain at least 16 characters and no common phrases or sequential numbers. ChatGPT suggests passwords with 123 and password-related words like “safe” and “security,” which are not safe or secure at all. ChatGPT even included variations of the word “password” twice, which you should never do to have a secure account.
ChatGPT can produce the same password for multiple users
You should not rely on ChatGPT to produce unique passwords since it can produce the same password for multiple users. For example, when I used the same prompt as above, ChatGPT generated these 10 password options in the screenshot below which appear remarkably stronger than the previous ones. However, just because these passwords are more random and contain a variation of numbers, uppercase and lowercase letters and symbols, this doesn’t make them safe.
ChatGPT generated these 10 password options for me, but ChatGPT will also likely generate these same password options for multiple other users. Since I used a very generic prompt, there is a higher chance that other users will use the same prompt and could get the same response from ChatGPT. When multiple users have the same password, this makes it much easier for cybercriminals to compromise these accounts.
Everything inputted into ChatGPT lives in its database
If knowing that you could be sharing the same passwords as multiple users isn’t bad enough, you should know that everything you type into ChatGPT remains in its vast database. This is a primary reason why you should never enter any sensitive data into ChatGPT. In addition, ChatGPT could suffer another data breach, which could place your accounts at risk of being compromised if you use the passwords that ChatGPT generates.
What is the most secure way to generate strong passwords?
Instead of using ChatGPT, the most secure way to generate strong passwords is by using password and passphrase generators.
Password and passphrase generators
Password generators are specifically designed to provide strong and unique passwords using your desired number of characters, uppercase and lowercase letters, numbers and symbols. By creating a completely random combination of characters, a password generator eliminates the risk of reusing passwords or coming up with easy ones you can remember using personal information.
Similarly to password generators, passphrase generators create random passwords using several random words and a combination of character types (uppercase and lowercase letters, numbers and symbols). Passphrases are stronger than passwords because they are longer, which makes them more challenging for cybercriminals to crack.
Password managers
You may be thinking that password managers are only used after you have generated strong passwords. However, Keeper Password Manager has a built-in password generator in addition to its secure, digital vault to store your generated passwords. You can also use Keeper Password Manager to generate passphrases by entering your vault and creating a new record. There, you can have it generate a passphrase or a password, based on your desired criteria.
Create strong passwords with a secure password manager
Now that we know the risks of using ChatGPT to generate passwords, the best option for you not only to create strong passwords but also to store them safely is using a password manager. When you use Keeper to generate and store your passwords, there is no need to worry about the security of your online accounts due to its zero-knowledge encryption. This security model encrypts and decrypts your data on your devices, so the company’s servers will not be able to see your private data in a readable format. Since only you can decrypt your data, your passwords cannot be compromised when you store them in your secure, digital vault.
