How the CHIP test works
The CHIP password manager test is divided into three main categories: security, usability and features.
Security comprises 50 percent of the assessment, covering the security framework of each password manager, with a particular emphasis on zero-knowledge encryption. Zero knowledge means that passwords are generated and encrypted locally on the user’s device before any data is transmitted from the provider’s servers. This ensures that the password manager provider cannot access the user’s data vault, as it remains encrypted and inaccessible to them. CHIP’s evaluation scrutinizes various aspects, including the capability to easily import existing passwords, and additional security measures like passkeys and master passwords.
Usability accounts for 30 percent of the rating and involves evaluating the performance of each password manager across Windows, Android and iOS platforms. CHIP examines factors such as startup speed, basic functionalities and password import capabilities. They also conduct tests on common user scenarios, such as creating new entries, autofill functionalities for password fields and password modifications for existing accounts.
The remaining 20 percent of the evaluation focuses on features. This encompasses assessing synchronization capabilities across alternative cloud services, WLAN or users’ personal servers. Additionally, CHIP evaluates search and sorting functionalities and pays special attention to the effectiveness of the password generator feature. They also investigate if a password manager supports a diverse range of devices and whether it offers centralized management capabilities.
CHIP’s testing methodology prioritizes the aspects that matter most to consumers: essential functions, performance in fulfilling core tasks and the alignment of industry claims with actual product performance. The assessment adheres to recognized test methods for ISO standards, aiming to provide practical guidance to CHIP’s readership.
