National Cybersecurity Awareness Month (NCSAM), which occurs every October, is an important annual event where government and industry leaders work together to increase awareness of cybersecurity best practices.
This year, NCSAM has taken on even greater importance due to the COVID-19 pandemic. Suddenly and with little warning, companies were forced to accelerate their digital transformations and initiate remote work on a massive scale. Consumers found themselves shifting their entire lives online, from shopping and entertainment to working and studying.
With both people and businesses having larger online footprints than ever before, cybercriminals have more possible attack vectors than ever before. Amidst all the drastic changes the pandemic brought to our work and personal lives, one thing has remained consistent: Passwords are everyone’s biggest cyber vulnerability. Weak or stolen passwords are still responsible for the overwhelming majority of successful cyber attacks, and all of us have dozens, if not hundreds of passwords now: social media networks, streaming services, email accounts, work and school logins, banking apps, online shopping, utilities and other bills … the list goes on. It’s no longer a matter of if a cybercriminal will target you or your organization, only when. In fact, it might have already happened, and you just haven’t found out about it yet.
