Cyber attacks are growing more frequent, complex, and costly. As a result, many companies, particularly resource-strapped small and medium-sized businesses (SMBs) are turning to their managed service providers (MSPs) for help. According to the 2020 MSP Benchmark Survey by Kaseya, 95% of MSPs have had clients approach them about cybersecurity plans and best practices, and two-third say that their clients are struggling to meet compliance requirements, such as the California Consumer Privacy Act (CCPA) and the General Data Protection Regulation (GDPR).
The survey was completed in December 2019, just prior to the COVID-19 pandemic. According to ChannelE2E, the report predicts that the pandemic will accelerate demand for cybersecurity and compliance services as companies expand their remote-work infrastructures.
MSPs have their own security issues
MSPs cannot protect their clients if they can’t protect themselves. According to the report, 37% of MSPs said that they felt their companies were more prone to cybercrime now than they were a year ago
By breaching a single MSP, cybercriminals can gain entry into dozens, even hundreds of other businesses. CPO Magazine reports that a cybercrime group compromised confidential data belonging to NASA and multiple Fortune 100 companies by breaching a Maryland-based managed services provider.
Password management is the foundation of cybersecurity
Since over 80% of successful data breaches are caused by stolen or compromised passwords, no security solutions suite is complete without comprehensive password management, and password security is an area that businesses struggle with, especially smaller organizations.
The Ponemon Institute’s 2019 Global State of Cybersecurity in Small and Medium-Sized Businesses, commissioned by Keeper Security, found that SMBs top two pain points were employee passwords being stolen or compromised (70%) and weak passwords (61%). Over half (54%) of SMBs have no visibility into employee password practices, and 50% have no policy on employee password use. Of those that do have a password policy, only 32% strictly enforce it and require the use of a password manager.
